“Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. Stand therefore, having girded your waist with truth, having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace; above all, taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one. And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God; praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, being watchful to this end with all perseverance and supplication for all the saints” Ephesians 6:13-18

To effectively walk out of darkness, we need to become wholly submitted to God, resisting the devil. We must be covered in the only protection that the enemy cannot penetrate, the full armor of God.

Satan does not give in quickly, and unfortunately; we see the casualties of his efforts every day. People who at one time were on fire for God are now out drifting aimlessly. Satan is desperate; let us stay aware of what he is trying to do. We must be passionate about staying out of bondage and seeing others live free as well.

“If indeed you have heard Him and have been taught by Him, as the truth is in Jesus: that you put off, concerning your former conduct, the old man which grows corrupt according to the deceitful lusts, and be renewed in the spirit of your mind, and that you put on the new man which was created according to God, in true righteousness and holiness. Therefore, putting away lying, “Let each one of you speak the truth with his neighbor,” for we are members of one another. “Be angry, and do not sin”: do not let the sun go down on your wrath, nor give place to the devil. Let him who stole steal no longer, but rather let him labor, working with his hands what is good, that he may have something to give him who has need. Let no corrupt word proceed out of your mouth, but what is good for necessary edification, that it may impart grace to the hearers. And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. Let all bitterness, wrath, anger, clamor, and evil speaking be put away from you, with all malice. And be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God in Christ forgave you.” Ephesians 4:21-32

It is crucial first that you understand the consequences of continuing to wear old spiritual garments. When you hold onto your old lifestyle after having been set free by the blood of Jesus, you are allowing Satan to take advantage of you. The fact that you have invited Jesus into your life does not mean that you are going to stay free of the devil unless you have closed all doors to the enemy. All he needs is one small opening, and his hunger for control begins to search for other areas of access as well. When he gains power, you end up in the same position you were in before being saved.

When you hold on to the old man and refuse to walk into the new man, you cannot reach the potential God has called you to. It is impossible to be a benefit to God’s Kingdom because you are wrapped up in personal struggles. You end up always praying and asking God to take the devil off your back. The truth is that Christ has already made the provision for your freedom. He has made way for you to be useful in establishing His Kingdom, but it will take putting your flesh under subjection to the Spirit of God.

If you are playing games with God or holding onto areas of your flesh, you are the one who is giving access to the enemy. Reality is not that complicated. When you provide a place for the devil, he takes control, and there is no good in him.

One of the ways we give place to the devil is merely neglecting our relationship with Christ. If you do not read your Bible or spend time in God’s presence, you leave yourself open to attacks. Satan takes advantage of you. Often, great people who love the Lord find themselves overtaken with trials and struggles because they are trying to “do” the right thing. They stay away from apparent sins and lusts of the flesh but neglect coming into a relationship with Christ. It is not about the works you do for Christ; it is about the percentage of your life that you submit to Him. He wants it all.

Our God loves us more than we can imagine. It is that love that risks everything to tell us the truth, even if it involves correction. No one wants to hear about discipline or correction, but you will never grow unless you are willing to be refined by the fire.

As parents, we love and comfort our children. Still, there are times when we must straighten out bad behavior. If we walk according to the flesh holding onto habits, addictions, and mindsets that keep us bound, we need to correct our ways so we can be more effective in the Body of Christ. I believe it breaks God’s heart to see the enemy take advantage of you or wreak havoc in your life. Do not shut yourself out from the comfort and love God wants to provide through correction.
