Our number one responsibility as the Body of Christ is to let the nations of the earth know that He is Lord. There is more involved in this than what traditional Christianity expresses through bumper stickers and lapel pins. The statement has become so common that it is dangerously close to losing impact. When you say that Jesus is Lord, that means He has the highest position in the universe, He has the ultimate authority, and every living being is subject to Him.
In order to walk according to God’s eternal purpose of making Jesus Lord, we need to make known the manifold wisdom of God everywhere we go, Ephesians 3:10 tells us,
“to the intent that now the manifold wisdom of God might be made known by the church to the principalities and powers in the heavenly places,” Ephesians 3:10
Many do not know that Jesus Christ is the final authority because the enemy has blinded them. Even though Christ is Lord and has regained authority, the enemy continues to try to use deception in order the keep people in bondage. As we have reviewed, Satan uses different tactics to keep us from finding out our true identity and the freedom secured by Jesus’ resurrection. The hope now is that the power of the Holy Spirit will enlighten our eyes as the Apostle Paul prayed,
“(I) Do not cease to give thanks for you, making mention of you in my prayers: that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Him, the eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that you may know what is the hope of His calling, what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints, and what is the exceeding greatness of His power toward us who believe, according to the working of His mighty power which He worked in Christ when He raised Him from the dead and seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly places, far above all principality and power and might and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this age but also in that which is to come. And He put all things under His feet, and gave Him to be head over all things to the church, which is His body, the fullness of Him who fills all in all.” Ephesians 1:16-23
For too long, the Church has concerned herself with programs and politics rather than the revelation and understanding of Christ. We were never called to spout the latest “good to know” philosophies. In 1 Corinthians 2:6, the Bible says,
“However, we speak wisdom among those who are mature, yet not the wisdom of this age, nor of the rulers of this age, who are coming to nothing.” 1 Corinthians 2:6
It is the only truth that brings the demonic spirits to nothing, making them void of power. Through the wisdom of God, Satan has been made of no effect as far as the human race is concerned. To walk in authority over Satan, every believer must make this wisdom known.
Verse 7 of the same chapter goes on to state, “But we speak the wisdom of God in a mystery, the hidden wisdom which God ordained before the ages for our glory,”
The devil knew that Jesus would take his authority, but he did not know how. Remember that in the Garden, God warned Satan that the seed of the woman would crush him. He did not say the seed of Adam; however, in the natural, a seed does not come from the woman. God had to bring the seed to a virgin so that Jesus could be born without the sin of Adam and ultimately take back the authority the devil had stolen.
From the Garden until the time of Christ, Satan gratified his desire for control by lording over the disobedient. Through that spirit of disobedience, we fulfill the desires of the lust of our flesh and our mind according to the course of this world. So many people load down their lives with heavy burdens laid out by the controlling taskmaster. However, Jesus came to remove the heavy burdens and bring rest.
The devil can quote the Bible, but he does not understand anything it says. He does not have revelation because he is a dead spirit. Before you were born again, you had the nature of your father, the devil, always seeing but not understanding. The power of Christ was given to renew our minds and re-establish us as man in the image of God. Your enemy is running around trying to find out how to get over on you, but he is limited in his power. Believers need to begin to act on that knowledge instead of running in fear or hiding behind tradition.
Tradition and religion are dangerous enemies of the Spirit of God because they lock God into a program or set of events. Even in Jesus’ day, the Pharisees and Sadducees acted out of anger and hate towards the truth. Satan used the religious sect to bring division in hopes of conquering Jesus. He used every tool in his tool chest, but Jesus could not be controlled. Jesus turned the tables on Satan and his demons by telling them to get out. Jesus walked in His full God-given authority, and the devil was powerless over Him.
Being so full of hate, the devil knew he had to get rid of Jesus. The plan was laid out – get Jesus to the cross, make sure He was punished, whipped, beaten, and tortured to the full extent of the enemy’s anger. Even in his “well- laid plans,” Satan did not realize that he was fulfilling the purposes of God,
“which none of the rulers of this age knew; for had they known, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory.” 1 Corinthians 2:8
Had they known what would happen when Jesus died on the cross, they would not have seen it through. Because of Christ’s obedience, Satan could not control Him. Jesus rose from the dead, and God the Father conferred Lordship on Him. Jesus gained back the title that Adam had lost. He recovered full authority and rule. Have you ever made a mistake and realized the devastating effects only after everything came crashing down? That is where Satan found himself after the crucifixion of Christ. The power had shifted. Jesus gave us this charge,
“All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, ” Matthew 28:18-19
The word “power” here is from the Greek word, exousia, also translated as “authority.” Jesus entered into the strongman’s house and spoiled his goods. He paid the debt for all mankind and took His place as the Lord of the universe; this is the revelation of the Lordship of Jesus Christ. That is what it means when we declare that, “Jesus is Lord!”
Every believer has the authority to make this wisdom known to the principalities and powers. When you know your rightful place in Christ, you are equipped to stand in the face of the enemy clothed in the power of Christ and not in your strength. With the right to rule recovered, Jesus now reigns from the right hand of the King of Kings to guarantee and procure the new covenant. We are to stand in His authority and go into all the earth, taking charge in His name and manifesting His kingdom.
What happens when someone with authority walks into a room? They generally take charge without asking what to do. We were never meant to be in a position of asking Satan permission or direction. Believers need to walk just as Jesus walked, with boldness and authority. Jesus left us in the earth to be in charge of it, as He had intended with Adam. Satan is a dethroned ruler. He knows it, but he won’t just roll over and play dead. You have to take authority over Him.
The devil cannot hold anyone in bondage who acknowledges Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. When we confess Jesus as Lord, we come out from under the authority of Satan and come up under the Lordship of Christ, where we are made entirely free. The devil cannot stop us.
Jesus is Lord and has, “raised us up together and made us to sit together in Heavenly places in Christ,” Ephesians 2:6. We share in the authority of Christ as ambassadors bearing His name. The church is the only one that can express Christ in eternity. Establishing God’s Kingdom and manifesting His nature is not just for some future date in the great hereafter; it is for right now. Every day, eternity hangs in the balance for the multitudes of people. We have the power and authority to make a difference. If we never step beyond our own lives and issues, if we continue to say, “Jesus is Lord,” without using our authority to set people free, we are falling short of our purpose.
