The dictionary defines diligent “to put forth continual effort”. HEBREWS 6:11-12 “And we desire that each one of you show the same diligence to the full assurance of hope until the end, that you do not become sluggish, but imitate those who through faith and patience inherit the promises.”
God says we must show forth the “same diligence” as the faith people of old. We must put forth that continual effort to believe, speak, and act on the Word of God as they did. Using Abraham as an example can stimulate us to leave sluggishness behind. Abraham continually acted and spoke like he had multitudes of seed before Isaac was ever born. He even changed his name from Abram meaning “high father” to Abraham meaning “father of multitude” then he departed from his homeland and went to inhabit a country that would be big enough for all his faith descendants. He really believed the Word of God in fact ROMANS 4:17-20 tells us that he was “fully persuaded” “(As it is written, I have made thee a father of many nations,) before him whom he believed, even God, who quickeneth the dead, and calleth those things which be not as though they were. Who against hope believed in hope, that he might become the father of many nations, according to that which was spoken, So shall thy seed be. And being not weak in faith, he considered not his own body now dead, when he was about an hundred years old, neither yet the deadness of Sarah’s womb: He staggered not at the promise of God through unbelief; but was strong in faith, giving glory to God;”
Fully persuaded people do what Abraham did, they make changes in their life to line up with the Word of God which releases the miracle power of God into their lives.
What “Word” do you have from God right now that you should speak and act on diligently until your situation changes? You see, you will have to change your words and actions to agree with Him before you will have the answer to the problem. No one may understand you or agree with you, but faith believes and sees the invisible and acts upon it. If they don’t believe and see what you do they’ll never agree with you, but you must learn to walk by faith regardless.
I also think of Noah and how he believed God for 120 years continually speaking the Word of God without support from the population. HEBREWS 11:7 “By faith Noah, being warned of God of things not seen as yet, moved with fear, prepared an ark to the saving of his house; by the which he condemned the world, and became heir of the righteousness which is by faith.”
You talk about “diligence”, Noah put forth the effort because the Bible said he was warned of God of things not seen as yet. The Bible opens our spiritual eyes to the things our physical eyes can’t see yet, that’s why, HEBREWS 11:1 says “Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.”
I’m sure Abraham and Noah grew weary at times of standing in faith on the Word of God just like we do sometimes. However, I believe that Abraham had a secret for renewing his strength when he felt like getting sluggish with the word of God. ROMANS 4:20b says “He was strong in faith giving glory to God”: that means when he felt like slacking up on his confession of the Word and camping in Canaan with his family and servants waiting for Isaac to be born, he instead began to glorify God. He began to sing and praise God until he would get in the Spirit, then the joy of the Lord would hit him and he would get strong again (NEHEMIAH 8:10). You see, we can have TOTAL VICTORY over our problems if we’re willing to put forth the effort to speak and act on the Word and do it diligently.
God said in HEBREWS 6:11 “We desire that every one of you do show the same diligence.” Now the truth is we have become lazy in our society to the degree that if it’s not convenient and quick we don’t want it. We want to get the results with as little effort as possible. We need to realize that we don’t change God’s ways to line up with ours, because His are already perfect. We must be willing to make an effort to line up with the Word, and as we do we will not only see impossibilities become possible, but we will be changed ourselves to be more like Christ which is God’s eternal purpose for all of us.
I’m persuaded that a great many of God’s people are like those who were in the great campaigns Jesus conducted, just there to get a need met. Once their need was met they were gone. But did you notice Jesus met needs to draw a crowd then He preached about how to change your life, to be the kind of person God wants you to be.
Today more people would see a better life all the way around if they were willing to change and be diligent with the Word of God. (PROVERBS 13:4). Those that are slothful and sluggards (lazy and indifferent) toward the Word cannot expect anything from God. But this verse says the diligent ones shall increase continually. The hand of the diligent maketh rich.
How about you, you probably don’t need more faith, but more endurance. As you are diligent to put forth the effort to speak and act on God’s Word your endurance will grow and you will possess what is promised. You can have TOTAL VICTORY.
